New program aims to grow film and tv industry

The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission launched a new workforce training and business incentive program to expand film and tv production in the area.

The program trains production workers and offers wage refunds of up to 50% to qualified productions which hire them. Linn Sitler, who heads the Commission, says that the state filming incentives are not enough.  In competing for productions, Memphis must continue to offer producers more than rival cities.  She expects that this program will help provide the needed crew and also act as an incentive for employers to give the newly trained workers some on-the-job experience.

Launched with a weekend intensive workshop, led by nationally-know producer James Spies (”The Contender”, “Commander-in-Chief”), the new program is shaped by the most progressive production crew training programs in North America.  Workshops by industry veterans and local working professionals offer “real world” perspectives and practical approaches to skill development.

Applicants must compete for participation in the workshop - the first workshop attracted twice as many applicants as it could admit.
